“For a moment time stops, and you feel the banal thing in your heart as if the before and after no longer existed.”
Cesare Pavese, The Muses
What can I say?? It was as we would have expected the end of the year tour........a late October with mild temperatures, suggestive lights and a close-knit group. The beginning?? A transfer that becomes a journey within a journey, two days before, almost all starting from Termoli and crossing the southern part of the boot, fighting with repeated road closures that attempted to overturn the planned itinerary, without however affecting its quality. The Tavoliere delle Puglie, the Lucanian Dolomites, the Calanchi, the northern part of the Pollino and the coast of Maratea with the inevitable stop on the top of Monte San Biagio, with the viewpoint of Christ the Redeemer and driving on the tormented coast, spectacular, panoramic, with the sun starting to hide behind Punta degli Infreschi, on the other side of the bay, our destination, the small port of Scario, the starting point of this journey. In ancient times, the term Cilento indicated the entire territory on this side of the Alento river, a mountainous land that literally sticks out into the blue of the Mediterranean between the Gulf of Salerno and the Gulf of Policastro. And from here we will begin the day after our two-day trip, immediately leaving the coast to highlight that we often move away from the sea, but only in appearance!! Extensive beech forests, holm oak woods and in the areas closest to the sea, olive groves and orange groves thrive. Inland, castles dominate, some impervious, which transform the arrival at Rocca Cilento into a real conquest. The coastline dotted with ancient watchtowers that characterize a coast made up of promontories, small bays, inlets and fishing villages.
In the preface we wrote that Cilento is at the center of the Mediterranean and represents it magnificently...…goodbye Cilento!!
Thanks to everyone, especially to the girls who endured an itinerary that was at times brazenly tortuous:
