This motorcycle tour in Italy is surprising, for the variety of landscapes and roads, particularly "pleasant" at times, challenging at others, but to be lived in harmony with the surrounding environment, which allows you to enjoy the streets, the scents, the food to immerse yourself in the fabulous scenery.
Read moreWe start from the Piedmont region, rich in culture and history, but probably most famous for its excellent cuisine, white truffles and above all its fine wines. In recent years, the vineyard landscape has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and is a wonder to visit on a motorbike, with its scenery to photograph without forgetting the pleasure of good food. After the Loop that will push us towards Liguria and its narrow streets, we will continue in the direction of the Mercantur National Park, we enter France, to travel some of the most beautiful panoramic roads in the world, such as the Col de Turini and the Gorges du Verdon , the "Grand Canyon of Europe". Wonderful curves and numerous natural tunnels lead us south, out of the mountains towards the French Riviera. Two days in Nice will give you enough time to explore Monaco, Cannes, Saint Tropez or simply laze like the VIPs who flock there periodically throughout the year…the "Côte d'Azur", one of the most famous stretches of coast in Europe. Returning to Italy to the charming villages of the Cinque Terre, the "Paradise of the sea". You will simply love to roam free in this extraordinary scenery of hills, mountains and sea…all under a blue sky. Have a nice trip!
Tour stages
Day 1: arrival Milan
Highlights: MIlan
Welcome to the capital of design and fashion, if you can, we recommend you to visit it before leaving for our exciting motorcycle trip! We meet at the hotel, you will have some free time to relax or do some sightseeing before the safety briefing. Afterwards we will enjoy a welcome dinner together in a traditional Italian restaurant (Lombard regional cuisine).
Day 2: from Milan to Alba 228 km / miles 142
Highlights: Oltrepo Pavese, Langhe
We leave the city towards Pavia and begin to tackle the first hills of the Oltrepo Pavese, a very famous Lombard wine-growing area, with lonely streets surrounded by vineyards that extend as far as the eye can see. After wandering in this relaxing natural setting, we will turn west to arrive at our destination, entering the Langhe and arriving in one of its most famous downtowns, the historic center of Alba.
Day 3: Alba, Loop Liguria 195 km / 121 miles
Highlights: Langhe, Giovo pass, Cadibona pass, Barolo
Today's loop will offer the opportunity to get acquainted with the Ligurian road system, a dense network of streets that seek direction and the consequent outlet to the sea, through the rugged mountains of this region. A passage on the Colle di Cadibona, also called Bocchetta d’Altare, at only 436m above sea level, but commonly assumed as the limit between the Alps and the Apennines, which connects the Savona coast with the Bormida valley, is essential. Short stop in the center of Barolo before returning to the hotel.
Day 4: from Alba to Castellane km 292 / miles 181
Highlights: col di Tenda, col de Turini, Mercantour National Park
Today's stage is long, let's not hide it, so we will try to reach Cuneo to climb towards Colle di Tenda quite quickly. The destination is beyond the border, in French territory, the Mercantour massif is the last promontory of the southern Alps, before this chain plunges abruptly into the Mediterranean Sea. A particular and extraordinary situation, between the sea and the mountains, which gives this national park unique and original characteristics.
Day 5: from Castellane to Nice km 207 / miles 129
Highlights: Gorge du Verdon
It is true, today we will close the day in Nice, on the Côte d'Azur, where we will also stop tomorrow, but the protagonist of the stage are absolutely the spectacular Gorges du Verdon, renamed the "Grand Canyon of Europe". A unique opportunity to enjoy the scenic beauty of this corner of Provence on the saddle of a motorbike: thanks to a series of circular driveways, various viewpoints, the most scenic spots are all within easy reach, fun and wonder guaranteed!.
Day 6: Nice, rest km 0 / miles 0
Highlights: Côte d'Azur, (Nice, Monte Carlo, Cannes and Saint Tropez)
The stretch of coast from Menton to Cannes is one of the most famous in Europe. Sunny beaches overlooking a splendid turquoise sea, limpid and crystalline, an impervious mountain behind the coast, which we discovered yesterday when we arrived on the coast, in which picturesque villages nestle clinging to the steep rock, a lively and fashionable nightlife with the legendary promenades, which among movie stars and VIPs have made this stretch of coast so famous. Definitely an ideal destination for those who love the sea, the sun, the beach life and the night life of clubs and parties, the ideal place to enjoy a well-deserved day of rest.
Day 7: from Nice to Portovenere km 323 / miles 201
Highlights: A12 motorway, Passo del Bracco, SS1 Aurelia
The A12 motorway is certainly one of the most spectacular and scenic in Italy, a really valid alternative to the Aurelia state road that crosses a myriad of more or less large holiday resorts scattered along the Ligurian coast. Dizzying bridges and daring tunnels undoubtedly represent a masterpiece of national civil engineering that offers the opportunity to dominate the Ligurian landscape from above. We will enter Italy in this way, driving for about 220 km before exiting at Sestri Levante and taking the Aurelia towards the Bracco pass, then plunging steeply towards the sp51 and reaching the Cinque Terre.
Day 8: Portovenere, rest km 0 / miles 0
Highlights: Cinque Terre
The Cinque Terre are one of the musts of this trip. Formed by ancient fishing villages, they are located along one of the most rugged and scenic stretches of the Italian coast. Each of these villages is characterized by colorful houses and vineyards clinging to the steep terraces created on the coast. The ports are crowded with fishing boats and in the typical trattorias it is possible to try seafood specialties, as well as the famous Ligurian condiment: pesto. The Blue Trail and a daring railway, in addition to boat excursions, represent really valid alternatives to get to know and enjoy this real corner of paradise.
Day 9: from Portovenere to Milan km 289 / miles 180
Highlights: Aurelia, Cisa pass, Salsomaggiore Terme, Fidenza-Milan motorway
Another day of surprises, and it could not be otherwise, despite being the last of the driving. To take the SS62, from the Cisa pass towards Parma, one of the most spectacular routes in the Ligurian Apennines, we will try to reach Pontremoli, along scenic and desolate roads, narrow, narrow, with almost no traffic. In Fornovo, when the road flattens towards the Po Valley, and the only way back would seem to be the motorway, another "small" detour to Salsomaggiore Terme, for the last dose of curves and views. The highway is now there, in Fidenza, arriving in Milan is child's play.
Day 10: Milan
Highlights: MIlan
We say goodbye after the breakfast today, hoping that you enjoyed your motorcycle tour through the most beautiful destinations in Italy. If you want you can spend a few more days in the beautiful city of Milan. Thank you, see you on the next motorcycle tour with Landsails Motorcycle tours!
Best food experience
The typical dishes of Italian gastronomy and the flavors of tradition that combine taste and territory. Guide, naturally by motorbike, to regional cuisine:
Who doesn't know trofie al pesto? It is an elongated type of pasta typical of Ligurian cuisine, probably believed to originate from Sori in the province of Genoa. Its peculiarity is the characteristic twist, which makes it perfect to combine with creamy sauces such as pesto.
Suggested wine: Pigato bianco.
